Ask AI what this product is like. Its shopping assistant has nothing to say.
Large beauty brand · Beauty

The product page had a full description.
"Vegan" and "cruelty-free" were only saved in the store's settings, where AI shopping assistants don't get them.
The reviews showed up only after the product page finished loading. Most AI doesn't wait for that.
A shopper asks an AI shopping assistant what a product is like. The brand's product page has a full description. The assistant gets a blank description, so it has nothing to say.
That's what we found on a product from a large beauty brand that sells on Shopify.
To a shopper, the product page looked great. It had a full description and customer reviews.
Then we looked at what AI gets.
Two ways AI learns about a product
Some AI assistants, like Claude, read the product page itself, the same page a shopper sees.
AI shopping assistants, like the ones in ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini, work a different way. They don't read the product page. They get product details from what the store has saved in its Shopify account.
A store needs to show up well in both.
What we found
- A blank description. The product page had a full description. But the description saved in the store's Shopify account was empty. The product page pulled its description from somewhere else, so it looked complete to shoppers. AI shopping assistants got nothing to describe the product with.
- Selling points hidden from AI. "Vegan" and "cruelty-free" were only saved as behind-the-scenes labels in the store's Shopify settings. AI shopping assistants don't get those labels, so they can't tell a shopper the product is vegan.
- Reviews AI couldn't read. The reviews showed up only after the product page finished loading. Most AI tools that read product pages don't wait for that, so they saw a product page with no reviews.
The basics came through fine: the name, price, picture and whether it was in stock.
Why this matters
Think about a shopper who asks AI, "What is it like?" or "Is it vegan?" An AI shopping assistant working from what the store saved in Shopify has no description to answer the first, and nothing at all to answer the second.
When AI can't answer, it often suggests a product from a brand that gave it more to work with.
What we can't say yet
This was one check of one product, on one day. We didn't track sales before and after. What we can say is what AI could and couldn't read when we looked.
Is this happening on your store?
